Little is known of the Uzbekistan league, but in a quest to improve their standing in the eyes of the world, club side Bunyodkor splashed out mega-cash to convince Brazilian legend Rivaldo to end his career playing in the back of beyond.
Proving that the money is well spent, footage of Rivaldo’s debut against Mash’al has been released, and the 36-year-old World Cup winner has proven that he is a cut above the rest of the league with a superb brace in his opening match.
While the clip is grainy, somehow it feels right, and the viewer gets a sense that Uzbekistani has only now reached the levels of world football back in the 1980s. Nevertheless, the class of Rivaldo shines through brightly. His first goal was a beautiful left footed curler into the top corner, while he double the lead with a cute chip over the keeper in the second half.
