Renato (Flamengo) takes down a pitch invader as the officials try to attack

This is insane.

Monday night in Brazil saw Flamengo travel to Avai in a match which the sides drew 2-apiece. Yet the scoreline was only one of the stories to emerge from the game as, grabbing it’s lion share of the headlines, was a crazy incident in which a Flamengo pitch invader was taken down by Renato while the match officials tried to attack the intruder.

The action occurred in injury time at the end of the contest just after each side had a player sent off in a sour termination to the contest. That sparked a sleeveless Fla fan into life as the 20-something looking invader burst onto the pitch and immediately headed for the officials.

Before he could reach his target though, the Fla fan was grounded by Renato. Flamengo’s number 11 had no problem getting physical with the intruder as he grabbed him by his neck and pinned him to the turf.

Renato’s strong-armed intervention proved to the fan’s benefit. In an amazing scene of officials gone bad, as the fan was taken down the match referee was preparing to defend himself with force. In fact the ref went through with his plan as he kicked out at the Fla fan when he was lying on the grass. The ref’s linesmen were equally up for the fight as they surrounded the man-in-black acting as back-up.

Eventually the riot police intervened and broke up the warring parties.
