“At the time I saw clearly that the player had stopped the ball with his hand. The replay on television shows that was not the case. I made a mistake and I regret it.” – Referee Wolfgang Stark.
We don’t often get to see the human side of referees, so fair play to Wolfgang Stark for fronting up and apologising for his penalty decision in Borussia Dortmund’s surprise 3-2 home defeat to Wolfsburg.
It is fair to say Stark’s decision to award a penalty to Wolfsburg and send off Marcel Schmelzer off in the 35th minute had a heavy impact on the game.
At the time, Dortmund were 1-0 up, by half-time Wolfsburg were 2-1 to the good and despite pegging the scoreline to 2-2 the 11-men eventually won out 3-2.
Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp added to Stark’s guilt by proclaiming that “if it had stayed 11 v 11, there would have been a different winner.”
