Referee Stuart Attwell is charged with making yet another cock-up

Uriah Rennie used to be the worst referee in English football. No longer. That dishonour is now all Stuart Attwell’s, and once again the young referee (just 26-years-old), who was fast-tracked by the FA, has found himself in the firing line for yet another controversial decision made last weekend.

As is the case in English football, when a referee puts in a dire performance in one of the top divisions the punishment usually dished out is to find that referee taking charge of a lower league game the following week. Apparently it’s acceptable to have bad decision-makers ply their trade in Leagues One and Two.

With that being the case, Stuart “ghostbuster” Attwell was appointed to officiate the meeting between Brentford and Notts County last weekend, and the man in black needed just eight minutes to ruin the game.

With the Bees defence clearing their lines the ball was hoofed up to striker Nathan Elder, who was closely marked by County centre-half Mike Edwards. As happens week in, week out in football, the striker appeared to make an honest attempt to flick on the ball, only to accidentally hit his marker with his elbow while airborne. In turn, Edwards came crashing to the floor and without a moment’s hesitation Attwell whipped out his red card and gave Elder his marching orders.

Brentford manager Andy Scott lamented the decision in his post match comments.

Scott: “The ball was in the air, my player was back-peddling, not looking at their player, there was a coming together, he’s a 6ft 3in center-forward and their defender went down. There was nothing malicious or intentional. You just want to be able to play the game. We had a good crowd of paying customers in. If it was a bad tackle, then fair enough. Refs are quick to get their cards out now. Our rules are exactly the same as the rules in the Premier League. It’s still three points at stake and our livelihood still depends on it. If a ref makes a mistake and they’re punished by being sent to League Two, is it possible for them to have a clear head in that situation? I think they should be taken out of it for a bit.”

Attwell is building up quite wall of shame this season. Top of the list was the phantom goal awarded to Reading in their match at Watford and then there was his blunder in the Derby-Nottingham Forest match back in November (watch here).
