There was plenty of laughs and bemusement had around the football world last night when David De Gea’s move from Manchester United to Real Madrid collapsed.
It wasn’t necessarily a straightforward case of schadenfreude, the collapse hinged on farcical matters like the type of file format documents that were sent in.
One can imagine De Gea didn’t see the funny side. The goalkeeper has been pining for this move for the last few months and took its completion as a given.
In fact, he expected to be presented to fans early on Tuesday and even asked his pop star girlfriend’s stylist to prepare a fancy suit for him.
Now he has to prepare for an awkward return to Manchester with nobody really knowing what awaits him at Old Trafford.
He could regain his place in the side, regain the trust of Louis van Gaal and United fans. But even if he doesn’t, Madrid apparently will soften the blow.
According to Spanish newspaper AS, Madrid promised De Gea that they would bring him to the Bernabeu this summer or pay him €10 million in compensation. It remains to be seen whether they stay true to this but it’s not a bad way to ensure De Gea stays keen.
