Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is open to a £27m move to Arsenal in January [Mirror]

As the lack of football hits home ahead of a big week of international football, the Mirror have tried to stay relevant by claiming Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is open to a £27m move to Arsenal in January.

(Is this deja vu? See old article from August and October linking Benzema with a move to Arsenal.)

The Mirror’s backpage has three headlines for one transfer rumour, leading with the claim Arsenal to splash cash in title fight.

Then comes the big headline – Wenger strikes for Big Ben – followed by the third oversized line reporting Real striker is Gunners’ £27m target.

When it comes to the detail of the piece, author John Cross, who is well connected at the Emirates, pencilled the following claims:

Gunners boss Wenger is desperate to sign another striker in January and has asked to be kept informed on any developments on Benzema. And significantly, Benzema is believed to be more open to a move after snubbing Arsenal’s advances in the summer when they were keen to bring him in.

Benzema has 18 months left on his contract, has endured a difficult season with the Madrid fans but has been starting more games and scoring goals in recent weeks… The issue could be whether Real Madrid would sell in January or would want to wait until the summer when they are likely to move for another of Arsenal’s targets of last summer, Luis Suarez.
