Porto fans taunt Benfica keeper Roberto with a live chicken

There was much to admire about Porto’s 5-0 dismantling of Benfica last night in the big match of the weekend in Portugal.

FC Porto now lead the table by 10 points after routing their closest rivals in a game where Hulk, the Brazilian striker, was simply unplayable.

(The gloriously named hitman made David Luiz, a defender consistently linked with the big clubs, look rather silly.)

Besides some fine goals, including a brilliant improvised finish from Radamel Falcao (cheers for the tip Little Vinnie) the Porto fans had some fun with Benfica’s hapless keeper Roberto.

In Portugal a gaffe or howler is called a “frango,” which is a word for chicken, and someone who makes a lot of frangos is a churrascaria, or barbecue.

Hence, the live chicken was thrown on to the pitch with the score at 3-0. There were also golf balls aimed at Roberto (not cool) and a steward slipped whilst attempting to catch the chicken (very funny).

Footage of the live chicken thrown on to the pitch during Porto 5 – Benfica 0 is here.
