He had played 45 minutes against Arsenal the week before, but last Saturday saw Philippe Coutinho make his first start for Liverpool since a 2-2 draw at Swansea back on September 16th.
Coutinho’s return was excellent against Fulham.
Brendan Rodgers has since explained “against Fulham I told him that if he could get forward, [Philippe] Coutinho would penetrate with his passes and he would get chances.” That’s pretty much exactly what happened, with the only downside being that the Brazilian didn’t find the target.
While Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez were able to unlock the Fulham defence, Coutinho’s endless amounts of trickery terrorised the Cottagers all afternoon. On another day the Liverpool number 10 would have had a couple of goals.
With Suarez and Coutinho on now starting to hit their stride after missing large portions at the beginning of the season, and with Liverpool in second place in the league, the Merseysiders are beginning to look like real title contenders for the first time in a long time.
