Panathinaikos fans set stadium on fire, Athens derby v Olympiakos abandoned

The top of the table Greek Super League clash and Athens derby between Panathinaikos and Olympiakos ended early on Sunday night as hooligans once again caused endless amounts of trouble.

Panathinaikos fans, seemingly unable to deal with the fact Olympiakos were winning 1-0, set fire to their own stadium and the match was abandoned with eight minutes remaining.

Due to previous problems, there were no Olympiakos supporters in the Olympiako Stadio but the Panathinaikos hooligans did a more than adequate job of causing trouble.

Greek police announced afterwards that 57 people had been detained and a further 20 arrested, while nine police officers were injured, two of them seriously.

Panathinaikos face a points deduction as their fans ran riot, throwing firebombs both inside and outside of the stadium.

Broadcaster NovaSports did not show many of the images of the stadium on fire and exploding firebombs, instead focusing entirely on the match, leaving many fan footage videos on YouTube of the shocking scenes.

A Russia Today report on the Athens derby is here.

The Daily Telegraph also found footage of the violence.
