After investing so heavily this summer, Fenerbahce suffered a massive setback last night by being knocked out of the Champions League qualifiers by Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk.
Fener had recorded a 0-0 draw in the first leg, but were comprehensively beaten 3-0 in the return leg by Shakhtar last night, which means there’ll be no Champions League football for the Turkish giants this season.
And that leaves ex-Manchester United pair Robin van Persie and Nani looking a little silly, considering that they’d signed for the Turks on the premise of playing in Europe’s elite competition.
Indeed, RVP intimated that Fener had real hopes of reaching the latter stages of the competition in an interview with the Times last month, but they’ll have to content themselves with the Europa League now.
There is of course no shame in losing to Shakhtar of course, who despite the loss of Douglas Costa remain a formidable and experienced team, with plenty of Champions League pedigree.
