Well, that didn’t last long.

Fabian Delph’s loyalty, that is. The Aston Villa captain was lauded for committing his future to the club after turning down Manchester City a few days ago.

But he obviously woke up in a cold sweat last night because apparently he’s had his medical with City today and a completed deal will be announced imminently.

When City activated Delph’s £8 million release clause everyone expected the midfielder to follow through with the deal. After all, they were apparently offering £100,000-a-week.

But Delph absolutely fudged up a routine transfer by discovering principles which he would quickly abandon less than a week later.

He even released a statement on Villa’s official website, acting like a big hero: “I’m not leaving. I’m staying at the football club and I can’t wait for the start of the season and captaining this great football club.”

Tim Sherwood praised his man, as did Villa fans, but now Delph has made everyone involved look silly. Twitter reacted to a second spectacular U-turn from the, ahem, Villain.
