Once again we’re left wondering how a professional footballer is able to do something like this.
Thursday’s over-bloated Europa League fixture list served up a fantastically bad miss in the match between Westerlo and TPS Turku.
The action started when a Turku attack was halted by some fine defensive play from Gunther Vanaudenaerde. Not only did the number 32 intercept a TPS forward pass perfectly, but the defender quickly instigated an attack with a slick one-two followed by a tidy toe-poke that released home forward Marcao.
After collecting the baton the Brazilian streaked into the TPS box. Then, after drawing out the visiting keeper into no-mans-land, he played a square pass to Lens Annab who was staring down an open goal.
He had to score. The net was empty. He had to score! He didn’t.
