“[Matt Ryan’s] a kid, he’s 18 years of age and he’ll learn from it. He has had a wonderful season with 11 clean sheets and he’ll get over it (because) he’s got strong character. It won’t bother him.” – Central Coast coach Graham Arnold.
A freak goal was scored by Melbourne Heart defender Matt Thompson during his side’s 1-1 draw with the Mariners on Friday in the A-League.
Minutes after the restart, with the rain teaming down, the Heart won a free-kick in their own half – just behind the halfway line. Matt Thompson coolly chipped the ball forward, and it travelled towards the edge of the Mariners box.
With no player taking responsibility to connect with the ball before it hit the turf, the ball then bounced of the skiddy surface and over the head of teenage keeper Ryan, who scrambled back towards his own goal-line, only to palm the ball into the net.
