With a bucketload of grease slicking back his barnet, Cristiano Ronaldo was given 45 minutes to shine against China on Wednesday night while on duty for his Portuguese national team.
Much like his role for Real Madrid, coach Carlos Queiroz picked Ronaldo to operate down the left hand channel, although the world’s most expensive footballer was given licence to drift into more central positions when the opportunities arose.
Early doors Ronaldo struggled to find his feet, but it didn’t take too long before his influence on the match grew. A fine one-handed stop from keeper Zhang Lu denied the number seven from 12-yards, but the Chinese defence were helpless to stop Ronaldo lead a counter-attack in the 37th minute that was finished off by Hugo Almieda knocking in the opener.
