Marca, the hugely influential Spanish newspaper, have sent a roaming reporter to meet with Standard Liege’s 21-year-old central-midfielder Steven Defour who has all of a sudden appeared on Real Madrid’s radar.
The Belgian schemer has been targetted by Los Blancos as their next transfer target if, as now looks increasingly likely, that their proposed move for Xabi Alonso does not come to fruition. The breakdown between Liverpool and Real Madrid is over the transfer fee for Alonso, the Merseysiders holding out for £30m with Real reported to refuse to go higher than £25m.
Liege have slapped a €20m price tag on their club captain Defour, who is a central midfielder who has also been targetted by Arsenal, Everton and Aston Villa if the paper-talk is to be be believed.
Marca’s interview (in English) with Defour over his mooted move to Madrid can be seen here.
In a separate video, Spanish television recorded a “Rafa and Xabi watch” during Liverpool’s match against Espanyol at the weekend. The video highlights the frosty interaction between Benitez and Alonso throughout the match.
