Manchester United’s Tom Cleverley feels he’s ‘going to be Van Gaal’s type of player’ [Club Website]

Tom Cleverley is ready to turn over a new leaf at Manchester United: new manager, new beginning; clean slate.

The central midfielder became the butt of many a joke last season, which veered on the hateful when a petition started doing the rounds to ensure Cleverley was excluded from England’s World Cup squad.

Despite all that adversity, Cleverley has kept his chin up and hasn’t let his self-belief be dented by all the abuse; he’s ready for the challenge presented by a new manager and fresh departure.

Cleverley is buoyed by Van Gaal’s preference for a 3-5-2/5-3-2 style, in which he thinks he can thrive.

Cleverley said at a press conference last night:

“I watched the manager’s Holland team in the World Cup and from that I think I’m going to be his type of player..

“I have to show that in training and most importantly games. I think there’s a place for me but I have to prove it.”

“I managed to have a good break and recharge my batteries.

“Now we’re back and all trying to impress the boss.

We know what he wants – a passing and moving style. He’s very clear and we have a good group of lads who are willing to learn. We made a good start the other night and we’ll see how we go from there.”

Cleverley will have the chance to prove it against Roma tonight, when he’s set to be given the full 90 minutes.
