Manchester United lead the Twitter tributes to Nemanja Vidic, after the Serbian defender announced his retirement from football.

Still just 34 – relatively young in modern football – Vidic has decided to call it a day, having been let go by Inter Milan earlier this month.

In truth, persistent injuries have probably forced Vidic into retirement; indeed, his inability to remain fit was the main reason why Inter terminated his contract.

But if the end was all a bit ignominious, and the beginning a little unheralded, then the middle of Vidic’s career is what people will remember.

Having signed for Manchester United aged 24 in 2006, the Serb went on to become a club legend as one half of the best defensive partnership of his era, alongside Rio Ferdinand.

A real warrior defender, Vidic became a cult hero among United fans for his ability to draw blood and continue playing, even if it meant with a bandage around his head or stitches in his forehead.
