French newspaper L’Equipe reports today that Manchester City are close to signing Roma defender Mehdi Benatia.
The new Premier League champions are thought to have gone ahead in the race for Benatia, who was one of Roma’s outstanding players in 2013/2014,
Benatia joined Roma from Udinese last summer and his excellent defensive performances in Serie A have ensured a whole host of big clubs are chasing the 27-year-old.
L’Equipe suggest that Manchester City have moved ahead in the race for Benatia, with the likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Manchester United all tracking developments.
Manchester City are keen to bring in Benatia who will be their one major signing, according to the French paper.
Roma paid 13.5 million euros for Benatia last summer and he is contracted to the Serie A giants until 2018.
