Manchester United are prepared to lose David De Gea for free next summer in preference to allowing him to force a move to Real Madrid in the next few weeks.

The latest development in one of the transfer sagas of the summer is a reiteration by United that they won’t be pushed around by any player.

De Gea will only be sold to Madrid this summer on the condition that Sergio Ramos goes the other way, but the swap deal is looking increasingly unlikely.

Both players are currently away on pre-season with their respective clubs.

New Madrid boss Rafa Benitez said that he not only wants Ramos to stay at the Bernabeu, he wants to make him captain after Iker Casillas left the club.

According to the Guardian, there is still optimism at Old Trafford that a deal can be reached before the window closes in six weeks time.

It goes without saying that United fans believe in the ability of Ed Woodward to deliver yet another world class player to their doorstep.

United are no longer going to be pressured into selling their best players to clubs like Madrid. They have the financial muscle to defend themselves.
