Man United & Mourinho sign pre-contract with penalty clause, Madrid eyed Pochettino [El Pais]

More details on Jose Mourinho’s supposed impending arrival at Manchester United have been made today by Spanish daily El Pais.

The disclosures have been teased out in an article mainly focused on Real Madrid, in the aftermath on Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat by Atletico Madrid.

That result has sought to tank Real’s hopes of winning the title, and the black clouds are hovering overhead in Madrid.

The fans want Florentino Perez out. The president, meanwhile, has been grilling manager Zinedine Zidane. Cristiano Ronaldo has been calling out his teammates. Fans have been calling out Ronaldo. And in general there is a hugely negative atmosphere at the club.

After sacking Rafa Benitez just weeks ago, could Real make another change in the dugout?

El Pais report that Zidane may not be “sufficiently prepared” to manage Madrid.

Moreover, the paper reports that Los Blancos had tried to resign Jose Mourinho in the New Year. The Special One’s agent Jorge Mendes, was reportedly in close contact with Los Blancos over his client’s possible return.

But then Mourinho and Mendes pulled a fast one.

Mendes stopped taking and making calls, as Mourinho agreed a pre-contract to join Old Trafford. Moreover, El Pais claims there are penalties if either party reneges on that deal.

The assumption in El Pais is that Mendes used Real Madrid’s interest in Mourinho to leverage the Red Devils.

In a separate note, the article claims that Real had briefly considered a move for Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, however Los Blancos quickly went off the idea because (a) it was felt Pochettino lacks the star quality, and (b) Real did not want to do business with Daniel Levy after their dealings in the Gareth Bale deal.
