It was a disappointing night for Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal.
The Dutchman saw his side tumble out of the FA Cup to ensure that he would endure a trophyless first season at the club.
What hurt him the most was to see Arsenal prevail thanks to United’s effective self-destruction.
The reigning FA Cup holders are through to the semi-finals after travelling to Old Trafford and winning 2-1 but both of their goals came courtesy of poor United defending.
Another aspect that will annoy van Gaal was the avoidable dismissal of Angel Di Maria. He was sent off for touching the referee and his manager wasn’t about to make any excuses for him. “In Spain, he knows that he doesn’t touch the referee,” sighed van Gaal.
