News has broken in France this morning that Liverpool have suspended defender Mamdou Sakho after the French defender failed a drug test. RMC Sport report that he was found to taken banned fat burners.
Sakho is likely to plead his innocence with the argument that it was for personal or therapeutic use but if a substance is banned then a punishment must follow unless he can prove he took it in good faith.
Liverpool haven’t publicly commented on the suspension yet but an investigation is ongoing into Sakho’s motives for taking these banned supplements. He’ll be able to turn to his teammate Kolo Toure for advice on how to cope during what will undoubtedly be a stressful personal ordeal after Toure went through a similar episode a few years ago.
Sakho has been in good form for Liverpool lately, scoring in the epic comeback win over Borussia Dortmund and the thrashing of Everton in recent weeks. More news on this story as we get it.
