Lionel Messi named FIFA World Player of the Year; Ronaldo wins Puskas award

FIFA have held their award ceremony to close out 2009 and named Lionel Messi as the World Player of the Year. The Barcelona schemer said on recieving the award: “It’s lovely to get this recognition from colleagues and coaches. That makes it even more important. The fact that I’m the first Argentinian to win it is also a great honour.”

The inaugral Puskas Award, for the best goal of the year, was also handed out and was won by Cristiano Ronaldo for his howitzer against Porto in the Champions League last season whilst the Portuguese winker was still playing for Manchester United.
