“To miss penalties does not make Messi human. Then he scores two goals and gives an assist. There is very little human about Messi.” – Luis Enrique.

Leo Messi was once again a key protagonist as Barcelona beat Levante 4-1 in La Liga on Sunday night.

The Argentine superstar set up the opener for Marc Bartra before claiming two further goals on 61 and 90.

Whilst Messi converted a penalty for his opening goal he then went on to miss a spot kick in the 75th minute.

Ironically, whilst Cristiano Ronaldo is often castigated as “Penaldo” for inflating his goal tally with spot kicks, Messi’s inability to convert all his penalties is beginning to suggest a rare weakness.

In February, we wrote and collated statistics about Messi’s poor penalty record, following a late first leg miss at Manchester City.

This did not prove costly, likewise the failure against Levante had no short-term consequences with Barcelona continuing their 100% start to the season.

Messi’s latest penalty miss can be seen on the video below followed by some statistics that suggest perhaps Neymar or Luis Suarez should be on spot-kick duty at the Nou Camp.
