Karim Benzema won’t be going to Euro 2016. The FFF, French football’s governing body, have decided that the Real Madrid striker should not represent France this summer because of the blackmail allegations he faces.

Benzema stands accused of blackmailing international teammate Mathieu Valbuena over the existence of a sex tape.

The details of the sex tape are well documented so we won’t go into too much detail about the scandal itself but the effect that it’s had on Benzema’s standing at international level has been dramatic.

It’s admirable that the FFF have decided to take this stand against arguably their best attacker. A lot of other federations might have been tempted to sweep the issue under the carpet for the sake of their chances.

France are under a lot of pressure to deliver on home soil this summer but have no shortage of strikers at their disposal with Antoine Griezmann, Anthony Martial and Olivier Giroud being among their options.

Benzema hasn’t played for France since October 2015. Read his reaction and the Twitter reaction in tweets below.
