Juventus have entered talks with Bayern Munich over Mario Gotze, according to Italian papers Tuttosport and Corriere dello Sport today.
The Italian press claim that Juve, buoyed by the news that the Bavarians are set to buy Arturo Vidal from them, are confident of getting Gotze as a return favour, as they seek to bring in a new midfielder to replace Andrea Pirlo – and possibly Paul Pogba.
Gotze’s time at Bayern has been a bit enigmatic: having signed from rivals Borussia Dortmund at the end of the 2013/14 season, the former wonderkid has failed to make a great impression at the Allianz Arena, and has yet to stamp down a regular starting place.
This is despite scoring the goal that won Germany the World Cup in 2014; but that goal was a rare moment of joy in between two seasons of disappointment for Gotze.
He was publicly criticized by Franz Beckenbauer last season for his supposed ‘childish play’ and lack of maturity, and with Pep Guardiola still unconvinced, Gotze may be tempted by a move away.
