There have been plenty of matches played across the globe in aid of charity in recent days, and whilst we have seen some big scorelines, none come close to the incredible 28 goals scored in Fredi Kanoute’s annual Africa United charity match played at the Mestalla on Thursday evening.
Spanish newspaper AS have described it as an “avalanche of goals” as a host of big name players looked to entertain the crowd and raise money to help feed Africans in need.
For the Champions Selection side, goalkeeper Ricardo looked to delight the 39,000 spectators and even in the first half there was little desire to defend, with the Africa United team going in 5-2 down at the break.
An incredible second half ensued, eventually ending 14-14 – Rodolfo Bodipo ending up as the highest goal scorer with six. In comparison, local hero Roberto Soldado managed a paltry brace.
