It takes some serious balls to recycle an old transfer rumour that was questionable to begin with, and then slap the word ‘exclusive’ all over it in order to make it feel fresh and new.
That’s what the Express have done this Sunday, linking Jorge Sampaoli (again) with a move to Chelsea.
Sampaoli is now a free agent having recently ended his tenure as manager of the Chilean national team.
It had previously been claimed that the 55-year-old Argentinian boss could be in line for the Chelsea job at the end of the season, and the Express have doubled down on that rumour today, adding the detail that the coach has already started learning English.
Are English lessons proof of anything? Of course not.
Hoping that their readers have memories like a goldfish, the Express hope that people will have forgotten the earlier tale claiming that Sampaoli wants to sign Arsenal star Alex Sanchez if he gets the Chelsea job.
Would Arsenal sell? That seems incredibly unlikely, especially to a direct rival in the Premier League.
Perhaps the bigger takeaway from the Express’s non-story, is that as we head into the final days of the transfer window, there is little activity on the horizon in the Premier League.
