It’s been a tough week for new Jamaican manager John Barnes.
The week began with the former Watford, Liverpool and England winger admitting in court that he was caught driving without insurance because he was too poor to hire a chauffeur. With nine points on his licence, Barnes faced a further six points and an automatic ban when he was caught driving his BMW X5 without the necessary paperwork, but taking precedent from Damien Duff, Barnes avoided a further motoring ban by claiming he had to drive to avoid “exceptional hardship.”
But perhaps even more embarrassing then claiming he was skint was footage of Barnes on the TV game show, Family Fortunes.
As host Vernon Kay introduced the former footballer he immediately recalled the Barnes rap in the greatest football song of all time, New Order’s 1990 smash-hit ‘World in Motion.’ Kay then turned on Barnes, dragged him into centre-stage, and forced him to give a live version of the rap in fornt of the studio audience.
The result was cringe-worthy. Like watching you drunk old nan singing at a family wedding, Barnes started swaying and displaying dance-moves which should have stayed in the 70s, as (to his credit) he faced the music.
