Jean-Marc Bosman sentenced to 1 year in prison for assaulting ex-girlfriend…and €275 fine

‘How much did he go for?’

– ‘He went on a Bosman.’

Jean-Marc Bosman, the Belgian journeyman footballer who inadvertently revolutionised the transfer system back in 1995 with his insistence on seeing out his contract at RFC Liege and leaving for free, has had his problems since retiring.

His alcoholism and depression have been well documented, and the two possibly combined in December 2011 when Bosman assaulted his then girlfriend and her daughter for refusing him another drink.

Bosman had initially been granted a suspended sentence, but, having failed to meet all of the conditions, he has now been condemned to 1 year imprisonment, as well as being issued with a fine of…€275.

A Belgian news report (in French) into Bosman’s case can be seen on the first clip below, while an archive clip of Bosman’s evident nervous issues can be seen on the second clip.
