On his Twitter feed, Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso described Inigo Martinez’s sensational goal from his own half against Athletic Bilbao as “the best goal ever scored at the Anoeta Stadium.”
Alonso should know, having played for Sociedad and as a lifelong supporter of the club this has to rank as one of the greatest goals ever scored by the La Liga side.
And is another contender for goal of the season, coming just hours after Julio Baptista’s brilliant effort in Malaga’s win over Getafe.
For the benefit of context, Inigo Martinez was responsible for this awesome own goal that went viral across the globe in early September so it will come as some relief to the Spanish Under-21 defender that he has made headlines for the right reasons this time.
Sociedad were 1-0 down on 61 minutes when Inigo Martinez took the ball up to the centre circle and let fly with an outstanding long ranger that made Bilbao keeper Iraizoz look silly as it drifted in at some pace.
It was Martinez’s first La Liga goal, the 20-year-old defender had notched two in the Segunda Division last season. It did not secure a point for Sociedad though as Fernando Llorente’s brace meant Bilbao won 2-1.
