With the most slender of victories, Portugal managed to keep alive their World Cup ambitions on Wednesday night as Carlos Queiroz’s charges secured a narrow 1-nil win away at Hungary. However, on a personal level for Cristiano Ronaldo, the world’s most expensive footballer once again failed to sparkle as a difficult start to the new year appeared to continue.
Ronaldo looks like a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders. Starting in his now accustomed left-wing position, CR9 consistently attempted to take on the opposition only to repeatedly lose possession in the first half. Frustrations were close to boiling point after 20 minutes as the Los Blancos superstar lost his cool from a set-play, finding himself aggressively acting out against Sandor Torghelle before the referee administered a stern warning.
Ronaldo’s inability to maintain possession persisted after the break with the Hungarians always managing to have at least one player immediately pressing the Portuguese star as soon as he received the ball.
That said, either side of halftime Ronaldo did manage to find himself in goal scoring opportunities but on both occasions the former Manchester United forward saw his tame efforts turned against by home keeper Gabor Babos.
