After many of the recent troubles which have befallen Manchester United keepers this season, against Spurs in the Carling Cup on Tuesday, Sir Alex called-up Polish goalie Tomasz Kuszczak, and in turn benched Ben Foster.
Happily for the Pole, Spurs troubled the keeper only sporadically throughout the match. Yet whenever he was called upon Kuszczak displayed a safe pair of hands and an assured manner.
Kuszczak’s central moment arrived early in the second half as the custodian palmed away David Bentley’s point-blank shot. The keeper was fortunate that the ball ran to an on-hand United defender, while the rest of his evening was spent collecting crosses, snuffing out the occasional through ball, and more generally just getting wet.
