… and then there was life after Robin van Persie.
Arsenal fans have been put through the ringer this summer as star-striker Robin van Persie has made it crystal clear he wants to continue his career away from the Emirates, yet on Sunday the north Londoners received a much-needed boost in the one-sided win in Cologne.
Thomas Vermaelan scored a header from a corner. Lukas Podolski kick-started his Arsenal scoring career with a brace. Gervinho produced a thrilling fourth that defying his hit-and-miss reputation. And Santi Cazorla shined in his first appearance in the centre of the Arsenal midfield.
Arseblog summed up the Spaniard’s performance as follows:
Santi Cazorla looked fantastic. He was the hub through which most things went, always looking for it, using the ball well and switching play with both feet with ease. He seemed to combine well with Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and although he played just 45 minutes it’s hard not to be excited about what he might produce when the real football gets going.
