The latest round of South American qualifying went according to the form book, with Argentina coming back from their 6-1 pasting in Bolivia to pick up the three points with a narrow win over Colombia.
The victory was by no means smooth sailing for the Argies who had to battle hard to emerge victorious. But, as is often the case, their star players rose to the challenge with Leo Messi putting in yet another stellar performance.
A constant menace throughout the match, playing in the hole behind Aguero and Tevez, Messi appeared full of energy at the end of a long season, showing off an array of fancy flicks and touches as well as jetting off on several trademarks slalom runs.
With that said, Colombia did there best to keep Messi at bay from the danger area, particularly in the first half, where for all his endeavour the Argentinean number 10 barely threatened the opposition’s goal. Messi’s best effort on target arrived early in the second period when, after being hacked down on yet another zig-zagging run, the Barca star dusted himself down before crashing a free-kick off the bar.
