NZ striker Shane Smeltz’s face busted open v New Caledonia, ref waves play on

How the hell did the referee not do anything about this?!

New Zealand avoided a shock World Cup qualifying draw with international minnows New Caledonia on Friday when Ipswich Town’s Tommy Smith scored a last-gasp 94th minute 2-1 winner, however the match will no doubt be remembered for an appalling challenge on All Whites’ striker Shane Smeltz in the final stages.

As injury time beckoned, Smeltz was taken out in the New Caledonia box when a defender planted a crazy-high boot into the attacker’s face.

Smeltz immediately hit the deck only to emerge with blood gushing from his face, yet incredibly the officials awarded New Caledonia a goal-kick when a penalty and red card were clearly to correct decisions.

A series of picture images of Shane Smeltz’s horror injury can be seen below after the video.
