They may have been crowned Premier League champions today, but Manchester City would have had an extremely different final day of the season if goals scored by English players had been the only ones to count.
An article by the New York Times showed that if goals from foreign players were ruled out then City would have been relegated!
The billionaire-backed team would have finished in 18th place and would have to drop down a tier; meanwhile, their closest rivals, Liverpool would have won the title due to the heavy presence of English players in their squad with Daniel Sturridge in particular having an outstanding season, surpassing the 20 goal mark domestically.
The reliance on imported talent by City is one reason why some might react to their title-topping season in a cynical manner, with goalkeeper Joe Hart being the only Englishman to consistently feature from the start for the champions.
