“I don’t want to make excuses. Mine is a criticism towards the refereeing class in Italy. I wouldn’t like to think that judgements made about Juventus regarding Calciopoli in away influence the refereeing. The so-called psychological subjection [suffered by referees] towards Juventus has now become arrogance. There have been sensational episodes which have damaged us recently. I can’t understand why there is this attitude towards us.†– Juventus general manager Beppe Marotta.
On the evidence of a crazy incident in Juventus’ 2-1 defeat at Palermo last night it is difficult to disagree with Marotta.
The key moment in question came just after the half hour, with Juventus already 2-0 down and heading for their third successive defeat in less than a week.
A cross from the right was whipped into the Palermo area and after a misdirected header from Giorgio Chiellini, Cesare Bovo clearly (and this was obvious to everyone in the stadium) handled the ball.
Referee Emidio Morganti strangely points for a throw-in even before the ball has gone out of play and was immediately surrounded by irate Juventus players with Claudio Marchisio receiving a booking.
This is probably the most obvious handball that we have flagged up since Rory Coleman’s crazy goal line save for Boston against Gloucester in the FA Trophy in January.
