When you’re down at the bottom this is the type of luck which you usually find in your locker.
Sunderland moved off the foot of the Premier League courtesy of a goalless draw at Aston Villa on Saturday while Crystal Palace lost at Norwich, however the Black Cats could have picked up two more valuable points had Emanuele Giaccherini not missed a first half sitter.
Minutes before the halftime interval, Sunderland had what looked like a simple opportunity to take the lead when Phil Bardsley found Giaccherini in front of goal and the Italian look destined to score.
Yet, somehow, from three yards out Giaccherini yanked his shot wide of the goal. It was a truly crap effort on target.
"When you're in this situation the ball doesn't go in – even from 2 yards! He's so down, he keeps saying sorry," Poyet on Giaccherini's miss
