How did David Luiz avoid a sending off during Chelsea-Manchester United?

David Luiz may have started the Chelsea comeback in the 2-1 win over Manchester United last night but the Sideshow Bob lookalike was the luckiest man in Stamford Bridge last night in avoiding a sending off.

The Brazil defender has impressed since joining from Benfica at the end of the January transfer window but whilst his ability on the ball is to be admired, he does have a propensity for rash challenges as he proved with the late penalty at Fulham last month.

Luiz was booked on the hour for a foul on Wayne Rooney on the halfway line and although he complained at the time that this was his first foul, just seconds before he had smashed into Javier Hernandez with an elbow, crushing Chicharito.

Once on the yellow card and with the score at 1-1, Luiz then deliberately hurtled into Wayne Rooney, catching him with his knee for a foul that referee Martin Atkinson didn’t even whistle for.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson went apoplectic on the touchline and looking at this video evidence it is easy to see why.

It was obvious to all and sundry that Luiz was heading for an early bath and he was withdrawn by Carlo Ancelotti with just under ten minutes left.

The uproar over Wayne Rooney’s elbow on James McCarthy in Manchester United’s win over Wigan on Saturday was massive, it is unlikely to be over Luiz. And will likely be compounded for the Red Devils in the light of Nemanja Vidic’s sending off.

In defence of those that will likely label this website pro-Manchester United, Wayne Rooney was caught diving in the penalty area just seconds before he scored the first goal against Chelsea.
