Horrendous scenes played out in the USL on Saturday – the third division of American football, in a game between Pittsburgh Riverhounds and New York Red Bulls II.

The Red Bulls won the match 3-1 but the scoreline paled into insignificance compared to a shocking assault by Pittsburgh Riverhounds’ Romeo Parkes on Karl Ouimette.

Both Parkes and Ouimette were sent off in the final minutes and as they walked off the pitch the former attacked the latter from behind.

Whilst English football was shocked at the events of Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Spurs on Monday night, this kind of attack is unlike anything that occurred in the “Battle of Stamford Bridge”.

In distressing scenes, Ouimette left the pitch on a stretcher and according to reports from the game, did not get up from the field after the Parkes attack from behind.

Parkes will face a violent conduct charge from the USL and there are plenty of calls urging for him to be suspended until Ouimette returns to the playing field.

At the time of writing Ouimette’s injuries are unclear. Parkes has apologised on Twitter. For that that is worth.
