“As a junior player I once scored a similar goal, but as a professional I had not succeeded. That was the best of my career.” – Eren Derdiyok.
We may well have already seen the goal of the season for 2011/2012 and it came from the Bundesliga where Bayer Leverkusen downed Wolfsburg 3-1.
It was 1-1 on 65 when a long ball came over the top from Hanno Balitsch. Derdiyok, on the edge of the box, took one touch with his left, flicked it up with his right past a defender and then swivelled and cracked in a glorious overhead kick.
The Swiss striker ripped off his shirt in disbelief and then calmly enjoyed the acclaim. He was obviously booked for taking his shirt off, which is undoubtedly the worst rule in football.
After the match, Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath called it “a goal you only see once in ten years” and Leverkusen Sporting Director Rudi Voller added “Eren does not score simple goals, but dream ones.”
