Manchester United 0 – Villarreal 0 (Champions League, September 17, 2008) (Longer highlights .) After a goalless opening hour, Sir Alex introduced Cristaino Ronaldo to a loud Old Trafford applause. Ronaldo made an instant attacking impact, just missing with a header, before the Portuguese star almost set up Jonny Evans for a late winner, only for the youngster to head against the post.
Celtic 0 – Aalborg 0 (Champions League, September 17, 2008) Celtic blew the best opportunity of the match when Barry Robson’s first half penalty was saved by the the legs of Moroccan goalkeeper Karim Zaza. Bruce Rioch’s charges were reduced to 10-men with 11 minutes to go, Michael Beauchamp was mistakenly shown the red card after Georgios Samaras had been trippeed by Michael Jakobsen.
Real Madrid 2 – BATE Borisov 0 (Champions League, September 17, 2008) Sergio Ramos put Real Madrid into the lead, tapping home at the far post from a Guti pass just after the ten minute mark against BATE Borisov. Ruud van Nistelrooy grabbed the second goal after Raul’s shot had been saved.
Lyon 2 – Fiorentina 2 (Champions League, September 17, 2008) Alberto Gilardino headed Fiorentina’s first goal at Lyon in the eleventh minute and the former AC Milan striker added the second with another header from a perfect Mutu cross, four minutes before the break. Frederic Piquionne gave the home fans some hope with seventeen minutes to go with a very controversial goal as a prone Fiorentina defender played Benzema, who set up the goal, onside. And it was Karim Benzema who scored the equaliser with just minutes remaining after a clever free-kick.
Steaua Bucharest 0 – Bayern Munich 1 (Champions League, September 17, 2008) Daniel Van Buyten put Jurgen Klinsmann’s side ahead, heading home from a Schweinsteiger free-kick.

Lisandro Lopez side-footed home the first and Lucho Gonzalez struck a fine volley for the second. Dani Guiza restored some hope for the Turkish side, firing home from a tight angle. Dorvalino Lino confirmed the win late on.
Juventus 1 – Zenit St. Petersburg 0 (Champions League, September 17, 2008) With just over ten minutes to go, Alessandro Del Piero put Juve in front against Zenit St. Petersburg, the veteran smashed home a quality long-range free-kick.
