Appalling scenes marred an under-17 match between fierce rivals Galatasaray and Fenerbahce on Monday as fans of Gala were accused of attacking and assaulting several Fener players in deplorable scenes.
The episode bubbled up during halftime, with the sides locked a 1-apiece.
According to local Turkish reports, as the Fenerbahce’s player made their way towards their dressing room for the interval, suddenly a gang of Gala supporters invaded the pitch and began setting upon the footballers. Several Fener players were injured as a result, with one of them reportedly suffered a broken nose.
The upshot of the violence was that the game was called off as Fenerbahce lodged criminal complaints with the police. Two Gala fans were said to have been detained, while a wider investigation was said to have been opened.
In response, Galatasaray issued the following statement to the violence. “The match was halted by events which occurred outside our control. We extend our sorrow to the Fenerbahce community for what happened.”
