With friendlies like these, who needs competitive football action.
If Hamburg and Hoffenheim could jump back in time, they would have no-doubt decided to skip their friendly on Wednesday night. Martin Jol’s side may have scored two goals without response from the Bundesliga’s current leaders, but neither side emerged from the game as distinguished winners. Hoffenheim though, picked up the booby-prize.
The Village Team’s top scorer Vedad Ibisevic (18 goals in 17 games) looks to have incurred a major, long-term injury, with a statement on the club website suggesting that the striker ruptured a cruciate ligament that could keep him out of action for a considerable period.
However Ibisevic’s injury was not the only talking point of the game.
With two minutes of the match remaining, Hamburg’s Ivica Olic and Hoffenheim’s Carlos Eduardo duked it out in a full-on fight, with both players unsurprisingly receiving their marching orders as a result.
The incident appeared to be all the doing of Olic. With Eduardo going nowhere on the touchline, the Croatian forward can steaming in from behind, committing the obvious foul that toppled the winger. Eduardo jumped up immediately to confront his aggressor, but Olic was waiting and thrusted his hand in the Brazilian’s face.
Cue the flapping arms from both players, Olic showing off the better boxing skills landing a slap right on Eduardo’s kisser. Both players were quickly dismissed and bans will likely be handed out in the coming days.
The fight between Ivica Olic and Carlos Eduardo can be seen here.
