Fat comedian plays football. Everybody laughs. Fernando Mendes appears at Benfica v Figo & Friends charity match

Fernando Mendes is a big name in Portugal and on Wednesday evening he made an appearance on the pitch in a charity match between Benfica and a Luis Figo & Friends XI.

For those that don’t know (we didn’t either), Fernando Mendes is one the most popular comedians in Portugal.

Mendes hosts the Portuguese version of The Price is Right (O Preço Certo) and is generally seen as one of the funniest men in the country.

The fact he is rather rotund presumably only enhances the comedy and he made a cameo appearance on the Estadio da Luz, at the end of the first half of the charity match.

His arrival on to the pitch was greeted with ecstatic cheers by the crowd and despite never moving from walking pace, Mendes managed to pick out a few passes much to the delight of everyone.

Also on Figo’s team were the likes of Edgar Davids and the original, Brazilian, Ronaldo, cue lots of other jokes about two rather large men playing in the same team.

The match finished 5-1 to Benfica. Dwight Yorke scored the only goal for Figo & Friends. Highlights here.

Fernando Mendes’ individual highlights v Benfica can be seen below. The video also contains some rather nifty, trademark, stepovers from Figo at the end.
