It’s been a crazy few weeks in world football as contracts involving some of the biggest players in the game have been leaked.
The likes of Gareth Bale and Mesut Ozil have seen their transfer contracts posted online via Football Leaks, while today Spanish news outlet ARA have revealed new details about Leo Messi’s contract at Barcelona.
Messi renewed his agreement with the Catalans back in 2014 when he penned a new deal to stay at the Camp Nou until June 30, 2018.
That contract includes a buyout clause listed at 250 million euros.
This season the Argentine is on a fixed salary of 22.8 million euros. That figure is set to balloon, however, this summer, when it’s set to almost double to 39.4 million euros.
That’s a monster pay hike!
Barcelona are also pretty trapped if they try to sell Messi before his new wages kick in.
ARA report that if the Catalans reach an agreement to sell their superstar before his wage ratchet, they will incur an automatic compensation cost of 19,941,000 euros owing to the player.
Moreover, the compensation clause also extends beyond this summer too. So if Barca decide to sell Messi in 2017 they will need to fork out 9.97 million euros.
