Everton’s International Champions Cup match with Juventus went to penalties, after a 1-1 draw, on Wednesday evening (early hours of Thursday in the UK) and what happened in the penalty shoot out was rather surprising.
After going behind early in the shoot-out, legendary Italian midfielder Andrea Pirlo stepped up to win the match.
Famed for his Panenka penalty against England at Euro 2012 and arguably the coolest penalty taker on the planet, Pirlo missed.
Yes, Pirlo missed.
The Italian maestro fired his shot wide of Tim Howard’s post.
Immediately after Pirlo’s spot kick, Everton youngster John Stones walked up with the opportunity to put Roberto Martinez’s side in front.
The 19-year-old, who signed on at Everton last January after coming through the ranks at Barnsley, calmly chipped home a glorious Panenka penalty to “out Pirlo” Andrea Pirlo.
Everton would go on to win the penalty shoot-out 6-5.
