England manager Roy Hodgson has admitted that seeing Danny Welbeck score a hat-trick made him smile.
Welbeck, England’s first-choice striker in the absence of Daniel Sturridge, bagged three goals last night when Arsenal beat Galatasaray 4-1 at the Emirates.
“It did indeed (bring a smile to my face), but I’m sure it brought an even bigger smile to Danny’s face and Arsene Wenger’s face,” Hodgson said. “The way he scored his goals was really good and it’s obviously good for his confidence after scoring two goals for England. In a Champions League game, I’m sure it’s something that will be a high point in his career when he looks back on it.”
Hodgson also explained the decision to call-up Nathaniel Clyne as one that had been on the agenda for a while. The Southampton right-back has been consistently impressive for the last two seasons.
