Chelsea today lost 3-0 to title rivals Manchester City but there was some good news at the full time whistle for some of the Blues fans.
Augsburg’s Ghanaian full back Baba Rahman officially became a Chelsea player, with the German club confirming the reported £14m transfer on their website.
The 21-year-old international is expected to compete with Cesar Azpilicueta for the left back position, replacing Filipe Luis who recently returned to Atletico Madrid.
Baba Rahman enjoyed a fantastic season at Augsburg last year, helping secure the club’s best ever finish (5th) and bringing European football to the club.
“Baba Rahman has developed for a year with us tremendously and made a great leap. It’s not just an award for his achievements, but also for our work, if an international giant like Chelsea are interested in signing shows,” said FCA Managing Sport Stefan Reuter.” We wish him well in England and all the best for his continuing development.”
Baba Rahman thanked FC Augsburg for helping him develop but admitted he could not pass up the opportunity to join Premier League champions Chelsea.
“I thank all those responsible, coaches and fans of FC Augsburg for the support last year,” said Rahman. This chance to play at a top club in England was a simple decision, even if I had actually planned a long-term stay in Augsburg a year ago. I felt very comfortable in the team and will follow Augsburg’s results.”
The young African full back had only joined FC Augsburg from Greuther Fürth last summer in a €2.5m deal.
Chelsea confirmed the deal on their website soon after:
Rahman said: ‘I am very happy to sign for Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world, and I can’t wait to train with my new team-mates and very much looking forward to working with them and Mr Mourinho.
‘I am also looking forward to having the opportunity to meet the fans as soon as possible.’
